If most prices are executing at the offer price, outsiders are buying from the market makers, which will tend to drive prices up.
If most prices are executing at the bid price, holders of this stock are selling back to the market makers, which will tend to drive prices down.
In Figure 6.6, there is considerable action at the bid price of 49 9/16. Which way do you expect the price of DELL to move in the next few minutes? (Down, because holders of the stock are selling it to the market makers at their bid price.) This kind of information is invaluable in helping you time your orders.
