6. Becomes depressed for days on end after a series of trading losses. Unable to emotionally recover from bad days.
7. Trades as a way of escaping from problems or of relieving a depressed mood.
8. Lies to family members or others to conceal the extent of involvement with trading (for example, how much in debt due to trading on margin).
9. Has committed illegal acts such as forgery, fraud, theft, or embezzlement to finance trading.
10. Has jeopardized or lost a significant relationship, job, or education or career opportunity because of trading.
11. Relies on others to provide money to relieve a desperate financial situation caused by trading.
Some of these indicators are not going to be so relevant in trying to determine when trading has become addictive. And some are very relevant. For example, preoccupation with thinking about trading may be a sign of trouble or may just be an indication that a trader is taking his or her work seriously.
Someone needing to trade with increasing amounts of money to achieve the desired excitement can be a good indicator of addictive trading. But we need to be careful, because it may also simply indicate that a trader is experienced and comfortable enough to take higher risks.
And, of course, unsuccessful attempts to control or cut back is a good indicator. But most traders don't try to control or cut back trading until they have already acknowledged there is a problem.
The excitement derived from active trading definitely provides an adrenaline rush that may help combat depression. But it is highly unlikely anyone is going to become a day trader simply as a way to deal with depression. There are easier and less expensive ways!
The last four items are clearly relevant in determining trading addiction. Any one of them indicates the need to examine the place trading has taken in the trader's life and how it may have become out of control.
