Positive Assertive Mode
In this mode, we take active steps to control ourselves or the situation. Examples of areas we may wish to take assertive, positive control include the following areas or domains:
Time management, including how much time in reading and preparation before the market opens, how long we stay with the market before taking breaks, how much time spent researching stocks in evenings or on weekends, time spent managing accounts, time allotted for other nontrading-related activities.
Procedural management, including the sequence of actions before, during, and after trades; noticing thoughts and emotions arising before and during trades; ability to stay focused when watching quotes; ability to respond quickly when needed for executing trades; keeping journal entries of all trades and associated reactions, reflecting on bad trades for clues as to what to change; noticing habitual nervous, superstitious, or compulsive behaviors related to trading; managing volume of trades; building in triggers and anchors; ways of relating to others in seeking out, sharing, or withholding market-related information; and habits for tracking investments, reviewing positions, and limit setting.
Mind management, including gaining greater control of thoughts and emotions through various tools presented, such as meditation, deep breathing, movement, inner dialogue, self-talk observation, thought-following, and witnessing from the observing ego. Working with fluctuations in attention during trading with the goal of being as present-centered as possible for as long as possible, then disengaging as needed.
Impulse management, including any dietary substances while trading that may affect thinking, nervous system, emotions, and mental clarity. Controlling intake of food, caffeine, nicotine, glucose, and any drugs; keeping the body healthy and strong to cope with trading-related stresses; under-
