trigger, we are simply using an effective gimmick to pull us out of one state and help us enter another.
So, if we are feeling fear, we create a trigger that will remind us of a neutralizing thought that pulls us out of the fear. The trigger may be to look at something in the room, hear a sound, or touch something. For example, I have windows that look out to a lush green garden and trees in my backyard. When I turn to the left, away from my monitor, and look out to the garden, I associate it with peace and tranquillity. Trades will come and go, but the garden will still be sitting there unfazed by monetary losses related to the stock market. The garden helps emotionally ground me, making me less susceptible to the tides of emotion.
The triggers, then, are the visual stimulation of looking at the garden and slightly shifting my chair to the left to be able to see it. Both visual and kinesthetic triggers (the physical movement of my body to the left) take me away from any fear to something calm, stable, and balancing that gives me a moment to remember that there is more happening than just stocks going up and down.
While it is not a substitute for periodically getting up and going out into the garden to be completely away from CNBC and the streaming quotes, it gives me a moment of visual and mental refreshment and perspective that lessens the intensity and duration of any emotion or fantasy which may arise.
While it is easier to make the mental shift with an actual view to turn to, it is not required. You can use a trigger to associate to a positive thought or to access an inner image that will serve the same purpose. For example, the trigger can be as simple as touching your left thumb to your left forefinger, signaling the inner search for the pacifying image that immediately neutralizes the fearful or greedy thought.
Choose a trigger that is readily available and associate it with a neutralizing image that will work for you. When you experiment with this for a while, you should notice that the association between your trigger and the positive thought or image becomes stronger. Try it and see.
The reason the trigger works is that you are building a body-mind connection between your trigger and the positive thought or image. While it is certainly possible to simply shift from negative to positive without a trigger, it serves the function of making the shift occur more quickly and with more emphasis. And anything we can use to make the process easier when caught in the undertow while watching the market is worth using.
